Plan Details

India celebrates June 19 as the National Reading Day in honour of P N Panicker, the father of the Library and Literacy Movement in Kerala. In 1996, the day was commemorated as a tribute to the legend as he founded 47 local libraries contributing towards the 100% literacy rate in Kerala. The Ministry of Education of Kerala also observes Vayana Varam (reading week) between 19th to 25th June.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has also asked schools to honour the day by conducting activities and competitions for students. In 2017, honourable PM Narendra Modi had launched the 22nd edition of the National Reading Day, taking the event from state to the national level.
